Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Interview Questions

The TCS NQT gates entry: aptitude and coding before any HR conversation.

Overview

TCS hires at enormous scale, primarily through the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT) for campus and off-campus candidates — a single timed exam covering numerical ability, verbal reasoning, and programming logic, scored against a cutoff. Candidates who clear it move to a technical interview probing core CS fundamentals and a detailed walkthrough of resume projects, followed by an HR round that explicitly checks for flexibility and long-term commitment.

Interview Process

  1. TCS NQT (online)
Numerical ability, verbal ability, reasoning, and a coding section, all timed and scored against a cutoff.
  2. Technical interview
Core CS fundamentals (data structures, DBMS, OS basics) plus a deep-dive on any project or technology on your resume.
  3. HR interview
Communication clarity, willingness to relocate or join any location, and intent to stay with the company long-term.

What Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Looks For

  • Fundamentals over specialization — a broad, correct grasp of core CS concepts you can explain clearly
  • Communication clarity — how clearly you explain your own projects is weighed as heavily as the technical answer itself
  • Flexibility — openness to location, project domain, and technology assignment across TCS's large client portfolio
  • Commitment signal — TCS explicitly probes for candidates likely to stay long-term rather than use the offer as a stepping stone

Practice Behavioral Questions

  1. Walk me through a project from your resume in detail.
Expect follow-up questions until the interviewer reaches the edge of your understanding — own your specific contributions, not just the team's.
  2. Are you willing to relocate to any TCS location?
Answer honestly, but show flexibility — this is an explicit part of TCS's hiring criteria.
  3. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Signal long-term commitment and tie your answer to growth within TCS specifically.

Tips

  • Practice timed numerical, verbal, and reasoning sections ahead of the NQT — the cutoff eliminates most candidates before any interview.
  • Be fluent explaining every resume project end-to-end; TCS interviewers dig deep into whatever you list.
  • Prepare a clear, specific answer for 'why TCS' and long-term intent — commitment is explicitly evaluated.
